Interested in writing reviews for Northern Geeks? Well now you can!
Here are the rules and regulations… I know, I know… rules aren’t any fun, but they’re needed to keep things in order. So I hope everyone understands why I’m imposing these.
- Reviews should be at least 500 words long. That’s the minimum. You can write more than that if you wish; in fact, you’re encouraged to do so! Just keep it to a reasonable length.
- Reviews should be “PG” – I want these articles to be accessible to everyone, so keep things clean. No potty mouth!
- When rating games, you should be using the “5 Maple Leaves” rating system. Here’s a bit more info on how it works:

This game was a complete and utter waste of your valuable gaming time; in fact, a little bit of yourself probably died while playing this game.

This game seemed to have potential, but inevitably fell short of expectations. Great in theory: horrible in practice.

This was a good game… it just wasn’t a great game. Although you might have enjoyed yourself while playing it, you’d be hard pressed to return to it anytime soon.

This is a great game: something you could easily recommend to your friends. Now if only it would have done this… or fixed that… it would have been perfect!

This is gaming bliss. This is why you started playing video games in the first place, and are still playing video games now. It’s one of those games that, once you’ve started playing it, everything else takes a backseat to it, at least until you’re done… or your body decides it’s really time you went to bed.

Note: Half Maple Leaves should be reserved solely for when you can’t decide on a full Maple Leaf value; when you feel that giving a game a certain score would undervalue its merit, while still being unable to justify moving it up to the next tier.
- Submitting a review does not guarantee it will appear on the site. We will pick and chose which ones will go up. Also, make sure that a review has not already been posted for the game you chose, since we won’t be putting up multiple reviews of the same game. It should also be mentioned that you’re not limited to reviewing new games. We’d like to build up a nice back-catalogue of reviews, so if there’s an older game you’d like to review, feel free to do so. If you’re not certain about a certain title, feel free to send us an email and ask us about it!
- If your review is selected, understand that we hold the right to edit your review. We’ll mostly do editing to fix spelling and grammar mistakes. We will never censor your opinion. Whether or not we agree with what you say, the judgment of the review will stay the same, meaning we will not modify the outcome of your review; we will not change the scoring.
- The last, and most important thing, is that when you submit a review, you are in fact donating it to us, which means it becomes our property. Some people may feel that this approach is rather draconian, but we feel that it’s important to establish this from the very beginning in order to protect ourselves: we wouldn’t want to have to remove content from the site once it’s been published. I also want to re-emphasize that these reviews are donations, since we are currently not in the position to pay for review submissions. Perhaps in the future we will be able to accept freelance work, but for the time being, it’s not an option. Be sure to indicate which name you would like your review to appear under, since you will be fully credited for having written it. If using an alias instead of a real name, which is perfectly acceptable, please make sure that it’s appropriate: PG rules apply to names as well.
So there are the guidelines for sending in a review. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, give us a shout, and if not, that’s okay too. We’ll also be coming up with a rewards and ranking system for those of you of send in reviews regularly. We’ll have more information regarding that in the future. So thanks for taking an interest in our site, and I look forward to seeing what you guys have to say!
